Woolston Riverside, Southampton
Foundation Piling Ltd recently completed a contract in Southampton, at the old Vosper Thorneycroft shipyard at Woolston.
The project was to provide a 136m long contiguous bored pile retaining wall and in order to achieve this piles of 750mm diameter were constructed using a Soilmec SR30 in CFA mode. Due to the location of the site the piles were of various depths, with a maximium depth of 15 metres being reached in some cases. Further end bearing piles were installed using a displacement auger adjacent to support a cantilever slab. The displacement piles were installed with minimal spoil removal.
A guide wall was installed prior to the commencement of piling which gave accuracy for the contiguous wall piles to be installed.
The whole project was entered in the 2009 South Branch Construction Awards of the Institute of Civil Engineers, the winners of which were announced at the Presidential Ball on the 19th of June 2009, in Brighton.
Woolston Riverside was competing in the Small Project (under £1.5million), Environment, and Sustainability categories and when the results were announced the project did spectacularly well.
From a shortlist of nine projects in the Environment category Woolston emerged as the winners, and were Highly Commended in the Sustainability category, also from a list of nine. Last but not least Woolston were Runners Up in the Small Project (under £1.5million), from a total of six projects.
Foundation Piling were very pleased to be associated with BAM Nuttall Ltd for the duration of this project and we look forward to working with them in the future.
