Out of the box approach for Hertford College
Foundation Piling was appointed by Beard Construction to support the new basement library project at Hertford College, involving detailed design for permanent and temporary works.
This included contiguous piled walls and bearing piles, with temporary works installed to stabilise the Grade I listed chapel using underpinning plunge columns.
Permanent works began in November 2024, with a GEAX EK40 rig lifted over and into The College Quadrangle using a 300-tonne mobile crane.
In early 2025, we progressed to temporary works, installing piles fitted with universal columns to support the chapel. Demolition adjacent to All Souls College required phased access planning before delivering the final bearing piles and boundary wall.
All piling works were completed by October 2025. Archaeological excavations continued through summer and autumn, with temporary piles connected to beams and needles to safely support the chapel during excavation.
